India is drying up, fast

Congratulations to all... we have achieved 50 degree temperature this year. Let’s cut more trees to achieve 60 degrees the next year,’ a sarcastic tweet the other day came as a jolt. It was, however, hard to tell whether the quiet sarcasm was lost on a majority of the readers who are following Twitter or had made more and more people sit up and think.

FIFA World Cup: Spain ready to thrill the world

Agartala, June 03, 2018: With a potent mix of hungry youngsters and seasoned veterans who have already triumphed at international tournaments, Spain boast all the ingredients to re-establish themselves as the best team in the world in Russia and reclaim the crown they won in 2010.

Spain were seemingly invincible for four years with three successive tournament wins playing mouth-watering football, but since winning Euro 2012 they have flopped in their last two tournaments under coach Vicente del Bosque.

His successor Julen Lopetegui, a stalwart of the national teams youth programme, has helped to re-ignite their attacking verve and restored the belief they can conquer the world again.

Spain tore their way through their World Cup qualifying group, winning nine out of 10 games while scoring 36 times and outclassing nearest challengers Italy 3-0.

In their last friendly outing, they blew away 2014 World Cup finalists Argentina with a stunning 6-1 win.

Weaknesses are hard to find in Spain’s squad, which is packed with players from La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid and outstanding Premier League performers such as Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Manchester City playmaker David Silva.

Silva, midfield puppet master Andres Iniesta and captain Sergio Ramos have been in the team since the Euro 2008 triumph while Barcelona pairing Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique have been around since the 2010 World Cup win in South Africa.

Then there are the next generation of players such as Atletico’s Koke, Real’s Isco and Dani Carvajal, Valencia forward Rodrigo and Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara as well as De Gea who won the under-21 European Championship in 2013 with Lopetegui as coach.

Spain have been handed a tough draw. European champions Portugal are first up in Group B - a match which is likely to decide who will finish top. They also face Iran and Morocco.

Previous tournaments: Spain have played in 14 World Cups and qualified for every edition since 1978. They have won it once, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the 2010 final in South Africa with an extra-time strike from Andres Iniesta.

Before then they had reached the quarter-finals in 1934, 1986, 1994 and 2002 but lost every time. As holders they suffered a shock elimination from the group stage in 2014.

Key players:

Isco: Lopetegui knows how to get the best out of the Real Madrid playmaker. He can play across midfield, behind the striker or even as a deep lying centre-forward and ran riot in impressive wins over Italy and Argentina.

Andres Iniesta: The Barcelona veteran has conducted Spain’s all-powerful midfield for more than a decade and was the heartbeat of their world dominance between 2008 and 2012.

Still as masterful on the ball as ever at 34 years of age, he will be looking for one last hurrah in Russia before quitting international football and leaving Barca.

Sergio Ramos: The centre back and captain has developed a win-at-all-costs mentality and knows exactly how to manage the biggest games. An unforgiving opponent for attackers due to his physical presence and never-say-die attitude, Ramos’s experience of four Champions League finals with Real Madrid and five major tournaments will be vital to Spain’s hopes.

Congress Names Adhir Chowdhury Lok Sabha Chief

Kolkata, June 18,2019:The Congress today named senior West Bengal leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury its leader in Lok Sabha, after failing to convince Rahul Gandhi to take up the post. At the long-pending strategy session this morning - where Mr Gandhi and his mother UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present - the matter was discussed. A letter has been written to Lok Sabha, saying Mr Chowdhury would be the leader of the single largest party from the opposition and represent it at all important selection committees.

The party also focused on tomorrow's meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss his "One nation one election" idea. The Congress has so far opposed it, arguing against it from practical, logistical and legal angles.

The question of a Lok Sabha leader opened up after the party's senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge lost the election. But the Congress was soft-pedalling on the issue as it wanted Rahul Gandhi for the position.

But Mr Gandhi, since the party's rout in the national election, has been insistent on giving up the party chief's post. The party has refused to accept it and there has been an impasse for weeks.

With the Lok Sabha being convened yesterday, the party today opted for an alternative.

Along with Adhir Chowdhury, Kerala leader K Suresh, party spokesperson Manish Tewari and Thiruvanathapuram lawmaker Shashi Tharoor were reportedly in the running for the post.

But Mr Chowdhury - a five-time member of the Lok Sabha - was chosen in view of his long experience in the parliament and the party.

First session of 17th Parl session begins

New Delhi, June 17, 2019  (Agencies):The maiden session of the 17th Lok Sabha commenced Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and Congress president Rahul Gandhi among the 320 of the 542 MPs taking oath during the first day of the two-day long swearing-in ceremony marked by some controversy, slip-ups and slogan shouting.

Linguistic diversity was in full play with the oath being taken in different languages as several newly-elected members sported colourful attire, traditional shawls and headgears while a section wore a saffron look. As the Leader of the House, Modi was the first to take oath as member of the lower house, nearly four weeks after leading BJP to a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah, Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari were among the prominent members who took oath.

The oath was administered by seven-term BJP MP Virendra Kumar shortly after he was sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Kumar will also oversee the election of the Lok Sabha speaker on Wednesday.

When Modi’s name was called out by the Secretary General for taking oath, members from the ruling NDA thumped the desk greeting the prime minister with slogans such as “Modi-Modi” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai”.

Amid thumping of desks by Congress members, Rahul Gandhi took oath in English. He won the election from Wayanad in Kerala.  Besides the union ministers who were elected to Lok Sabha, members from 23 states and union territories took oath. In all, 320 MPs took oath, according to a Lok Sabha bulletin. The remaining 222 members will take oath on Tuesday.

Interview with Jitendra Chowdhury sitting MP and LF candidate for East Tripura parliamentary seat

After facing a big-margined defeat in the last assembly elections, the state unit of CPIM rose back to fight the Lok Sabha polls on their own. Keeping no surprises, the party once again showed confidence on Jitendra Chowdhury for the ST reserved East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency. The veteran Communist leader, who had completed his first term in office as an MP followed by two terms as Minister in the state cabinet, once again nominated by the party and too at a point of time when it is a fight of existence for his party. In an exclusive interview with Mrinal Banik  of Tripura  Times, Chowdhury claimed, in just one year the association of anti-left powers that emerged before the Assembly elections has broken into pieces giving the CPIM a golden opportunity to script victory in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. He also put stress on various relatable issues of the state politics which in turn gave the ruling BJP-IPFT government major setback.
