Sovan Chatterjee Resigns As Minister. Mamata Banerjee Asks Him To Quit As Kolkata Mayor Too

Kolkata,Nov 21,2018: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sovan Chatterjee, who is the Fire and Emergency Services and Housing minister in West Bengal, resigned from the state cabinet on Tuesday, news agency ANI reported. Reports also suggested that he would also quit as mayor of Kolkata city. As per the news agency,  State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim has taken charge of both departments.

Following his resignation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked him to quit his post as Kolkata Mayor as well by tomorrow, news agency PTI reported. As per sources, Banerjee is said to be livid at his decision to resign from the state cabinet. Notably, this will be the first time in the party's history when a mayor would be resigning from his or her post.

Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat, Banerjee said, "He had earlier expressed his will to resign four-five times... We thought that he will realise (his mistakes). He resigned today and we have accepted it. He has also been asked to quit the post of city mayor."

Chatterjee's resignation letter has been forwarded to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. "Firhad Hakim will take additional responsibilities of the two departments held by Chatterjee. Since a mayor has to be elected, we will decide on it later,"  the chief minister told reporters. She added that Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Khalil Ahmed has been directed to oversee operations of the civic body for the meantime.
