The Inspector General of  BSF  S. R. Ojha  is a 1989 batch IPS officer of  Himachal Pradesh  cadre. He is a  honours graduate in English from DAV College, Chandigarh  and during his distinguished career spanning  29 years, he has held many important portfolios. He was Additional DG of Himachal Pradesh police before taking over charge as IG of BSF, Tripura Frontier on September, 2017. Here is an exclusive interview  with tripuravision.com at his office in Shalbagan.

tripuravision.com :- Election of Tripura assembly election  is round the corner what steps taken  to  guard the international border?

IG:- All the 245 the 245 Border Outposts along the 856-km-long Tripura-Bangladesh International Border have been put on maximum alert to thwart any attempt of infiltration by the terrorists or Indian insurgents operating from the soil of the neighbouring country. Very soon the international border  will be sealed. Right now eighteen battalions of BSF are deployed along the entire stretch of the border.

 tripuravision.com:-    Is there any possibilities of intrusion of terrorists and anti social elements ahead of election in the state

IG: - We do not see  any  possibilities of intrusion of  terrorists and others anti social elements to enter into the state. But the borders in the unfenced areas are still vulnerable, so we have put all the border outposts (BOPs) in alert. Besides  one or two  more battalions likely to come before election for strengthening the security of international border.   We have augmented our forces in the border to check intrusion.

tripuravison.com:- What is the strength of NLFT militants?

   IG :- As per intelligence input the strength of NLFT militants  is  60 to 70.They are in severe financial crisis. Moreover they are under constant pressure from Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) and always in move. Last month there was IG level meeting of BGB and BSF in Chittagong. IGs of Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Cachar frontier attended the meeting. Various  border related issues was discussed with the BGB counterpart but the issue of militant hideouts in   Chittagong Hill Tract of Bangladesh (CHT) was top on the agenda.


tripuravision.com:- What about the status of border fencing along the international border?

IG :- Out of the 856-km-long border,fencing work completed in  765 , work is in progress in 70 km and work is yet to start in 21 km. Besides  most part of the border in the state was brought under the coverage of flood lighting and closed circuit cameras were fixed for better surveillance. Altogether 64 composite BOPs having all facilities have been  constructed in Tripura.Construction of one composite BOP costs Rs 5-6 crore having the facilities like good barrack, toilets, dining hall and helipad.

 tripuravision:- Achievement of BSF in 2017?

IG:-  The seizure made by BSF was remarkable. BSF in 2017 seized phensedyl worth Rs 3.21 crore  in 2016 seized phensedyl worth was Rs1.93 crore.  In 2017 around 8770 kg of ganja was seized  compared to 7053 kg of ganja seized in 2016.  Besides all BSF battalions have done civic action programs like – organizing free health camps, setting up computer training institute, imparting skill development training, vocational training to women on sewing and giving training to youths of the border areas for participating in rallies of security forces.
