Re – poll to held at 168 Polling Booths in West Tripura Parliamentary Constituency

Agartala, May 8,2019: The Election Commission of India (ECI) Wednesday ordered fresh poll in 168 polling  booths  of West Tripura parliamentary constituency which is  the highest for any Lok Sabha constituency in the ongoing elections in the entire country.

The repolling is scheduled for the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 12, from 7 am to 5 pm, as per the ECI new direction to the state election commission. The west Tripura parliamentary constituency has 1,679 polling booths all total.

According to the ECI letters to the state election commission, the commission declared the fresh poll in 168 polling booths to be  held at these polling booths void based on reports submitted by the chief electoral officer, special observer and the returning officer.

Retired IAS officer and former Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi, who was appointed Special Observer for Tripura on April 22, had recommended repolling in 131 polling stations in his initial report to ECI recently, on the ground that the "poll process was vitiated".

Meanwhile, CPI (M) had raised demand for re-polls in 774 booths in West Tripura seat instead of 464 demanded earlier on the basis of initial report. Similarly, opposition Congress also raised their demands from 151 booths to 441 booths under West Tripura seat for repoll. Latter dates both the Congress and CPI (M) demanded repoll in the entire west Tripura parliamentary constituency.
