State govt giving all assistance to AMC, says Ratan

Agartala, May 13,2019: Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath refuted the allegations made by   Mayor, Agartala Municipal Corporation ( AMC) against  Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. Addressing a press meet today at secretariat Nath said, “ The allegation that the Corporation representatives could not meet Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb after several attempts is entirely false and fabricated”

“The fact is in last  one year  three meeting was held between AMC representatives  and Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The first meeting of Chief Minister Deb and Mayor Dr Prafullajit Sinha took place on June 10, 2018 at Mayor’s residence, the second visit took place on October 08, 2018 at CM’s official residence and third meet took place at CM’s official chamber in Secretariat on February 08, 2019” said Ratan Nath.

Apart from these, both  Mayor and Chief Minister jointly visited different areas of Agartala Municipal Corporation. Among these, Mayor spent almost an entire day with CM during one of the field visits. Hence, why these representatives are lying before people? These representatives are trying their best  to cover their failure by tarnishing the image of government, he added.

The Law Minister criticizing  the representatives of AMC said they are  befooling the people of Tripura by planting false and fabricating allegation to   tarnish the image of  14-month old  BJP – IPFT government .

Speaking about allegation of  non release of funds by the state government, Nath said last fiscal year 2018-19, state government has given total amount of Rs 71.62 crore (Share of Taxes: Rs 30.81 crore, 14th Finance Commission Grant of Rs. 20.57 crore, TUEP grant of Rs. 21.24 crore) grant to Agartala Municipal Corporation. It is to be mentioned that last year own revenue income of Agartala Municipal Corporation was only Rs 22 crore.

He further said that the funds are being sanctioned on the basis of populace of the urban local bodies. In Tripura, 8.98 lakh people live in urban areas covering a land of 242.83 square kilometres and the Agartala urban body itself covers 76.05 square kilometers with 5.34 lakh population.

Rubbishing the allegations of renovating works of the roads in AMC areas, Nath said that the PWD department is looking after the works of main roads of the Corporation area while the AMC holds the responsibility of repairing narrow and smaller roads of 49 wards.

Law minister firmly asserted, "It is clearly mentioned in the 74th amendment of the Indian Constitution that the government must provide full autonomy to the Municipal Corporation. Hence, how can the state government interfere in this autonomous body". "However, the former minister of Urban Development used to interfere in all works of the Corporation which had become a habit and was practiced for long 25 years in Tripura. Thus change in the mentality will not come so quickly and that is why they are making allegations on such petty issues against the government", he also added.
