Tripura HC bans motor converted – rickshaws

Agartala, May 30,2019: In an important judgement, the High Court of Tripura today asked the state government to stop plying of converted motor-rickshaws on roads. During hearing on a Public Interest Litigation that seeks directions to the state government to regulate the conversion of paddle rickshaws into motor-rickshaws, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh directed the Municipal Commissioner of AMC,DM (West), SP (Traffic) and Transport department authorities to take steps forth with to prevent plying of such manually driven rickshaws operated with a battery/motori nstalled therein.

The Bench took note of the petitioner’s stand that the operation of e-rickshaws was unauthorized and illegal under the law. When contacted Advocate General AK Bhowmik, he said, “The court did not entertain state government’s plea that sought time. “We will explore options to amend the existing laws to take e-rickshaws into the ambit of legislation”. However, we have not received the copy of the judgment, he added.

Notably, with the traffic in the city growing by leaps and bounds, auto-rickshaws mostly motor-rickshaws and battery-propelled rickshaws and goods-carrying vehicles plying here have only added to the woes.
