Badarghat by – poll : Bitterly fought campaign ends, voting on Monday

Agartala, Sept 21, 2019:The campaigning for the by-election to Badharghat (SC) assembly constituency ended today at 4-30 PM.  During the last hour congress led by its two senior leader Subal Bhowmik and Birajit Sinha organized a road show, whereas main opposition CPM and ruling BJP conducted door to door campaign and road side meeting.

There are 71 polling booths, Central Armed Paramilitary Forces ( CAPF) will be deployed in all polling booths except one.14 polling booths have been identified as sensitive and two as hyper sensitive booths. One section of CAPF will be deployed in all 16 polling booths. Outside polling booths there will also be CAPF. Besides videography will be done both inside and outside each  polling booth..

The Badharghat assembly constituency had been a strong bastion of Congress in the three consecutive earlier elections as party candidate Dilip Sarkar had won the seat in 2008,2013 and last time as BJP candidate by a big margin of 5448 votes. But Sarkar's premature death in April this year has left a big void for Congress here. Ratan Das , the Congress candidate , is a rank outside in the constituency and on the wrong side of caste configurations in the electorate. Besides, the confusion in the Congress rank and file over the resignation of PCC president Pradyot Kishore has also come as a blow to the prospects of Congress candidate who is likely to end up as only an 'also-ran'.

Contrary to speculations , the CPI (M) candidate Bulti Biswas, a Councillor of CPI (M) in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) seems to have gained rapid grounds riding the crest of anti-incumbency over the performance of the state government. Despite being in state power which is a natural advantage, the BJP candidate Mimi Majumder Das confronts discontent even among hardcore BJP supporters who consider her a greenhorn in politics and always recall her days as a committed CPI (M) worker in the past . Even though the BJP is putting in everything in the election, Mimi can win the seat by a reduced margin only , according to BJP workers and supporters many of whom have ceased active work for the polls. But the BJP is expected to win the seat by fair means or foul despite mounting anti-incumbency sentiment.
