After decades ‘ bar ‘ starts in Tripura

Agartla, Nov 03,2019: The first  licensed  ‘ bar’ in Tripura started in a hotel on Saturday near Fire Brigade Chowmuhani, Agartala. The ruling  BJP government  after coming to power decided to give licenses for opening drinking bar in the state. An employee of the hotel said the bar will remain open from 11 AM morning till 11 PM night. Only  adults will be allowed to enter the bar. The employee further added opening of bar will boost tourism in the state, especially for those who comes from outside.

Decades back the first bar to come up at Agartala perhaps in the early sixties was a part of the then Ritz hotel next to old Rupchaya cinema hall. Another bar called “Jaihind bar” came up in close vicinity.

Later a new bar with a give away name “Drincos” came up near SurjyaChowmuhani. It became very popular as it was decorated with coloured lighting and served drinks in beautiful wine glasses. All the bars closed shop sometime in the late seventies or early eighties

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb government   after coming to power decided to open licensed bar in hotels and more liquor shops in the state  for generating revenue.

There are good numbers of liquor shops in the state selling both country and foreign liquor and judging by the long queues outside the shops in the evening hours there is no dearth of clients.

Reacting to opening of bar CPM leader Gautam Das  said, “It may help the government in earning some revenue but it will also have a social impact. The government not just only calculate loss and profit, but it should also look at the impact of liquor in society,” he added.

He, further said, “CPI (M) always opposed the opening of open liquor shops in the state. From 102 liquor shops, the CPI (M) government brought it down to 81”.
