Govt increases price of sugar by Rs 6 per kg

Agartala, March 08 (TVN):The  state government  decided to raise price of sugar sold through ration shops. Speaking to reporters at secretariat about the decision Manik Dey , transport minister said  the cabinet  approved the proposal to increase  price of sugar by Rs 6 a kg which will be in effect from April 1st, 2016.

The reason for increasing the price, Dey said  due to increased  of sugar price  in open market the  cabinet  was compelled  to approve the decision. “  At present, the government buys sugar at Rs 32.49 a kg from open market and sells it at a subsidised rate of Rs 16 a kg through the public distribution system (PDS)” he added.

In 2013, the Centre  unshackled the Rs. 80,000-crore sugar industry by abolishing the monthly release mechanism and doing away with the mills’ obligation to supply levy sugar for subsidized distribution under the Public Distribution System, thus allowing market forces to come into play. The difference between the purchase price and the issue price is  borne by the union government.

The decision, in line with the suggestions of a panel headed by C. Rangarajan, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
